I started coaching in 2008, at aged 14, as soon as I was old enough to complete my Basketball England Foundation Coaching Award. I then began player-coaching my school U14 and U16 teams, before moving schools for Sixth Form where I coached the U12-U16 teams while playing Dynamik Schools U19’s.
At this time I also began my journey in National League basketball, playing U16’s & U18’s for Shropshire Warriors, while also assisting with the NBL U14 Boys team. Throughout my last few seasons as a junior player in the Midlands, I completed my Level 1 Coaching Award under the tutelage of Sergio Lara-Bercial at age 16, then completed my Level 2 Coaching Award at age 18, tutored by Carsten Dieterich, Tom Sunley, Stephen Barnes and Pete Mintoft.
Heading off to university, I joined Cardiff Met Archers where I began playing in BUCS and SWBA, while also coaching the Archers U16 squad. Throughout 5 years at Cardiff Met, I coached club teams at the SWJL U14, SWBA U16, NBL U18, and NBL D3 Men levels, while also being on the support staff of the WBBL squad.
In my latter years with the club, alongside playing and coaching, I completed my Level 1, 2, and 3 qualifications in both Refereeing and Table Officiating, and qualified as a FIBA Statistician. This development across all officating roles led me to be appointed as the club’s first Officiating Development Officer. While much of my attention was focused on playing, coaching and officiating, I also headed up the club media, revamping the club social media and club website to drive increased engagement.
In the final year of my undergrad and into my Masters Degree in Performance Analysis, as player-coach I set up a BUCS Men’s 2nd team in 2014/15 to increase participation, before coaching the BUCS Men’s programme to back-to-back league titles in BUCS Western 3A (2015/16) and BUCS Western 2B (2016/17), while also picking up SWBA D2 Cup runners-up and SWBA D2 Playoff winners medals in 2015/16. As a player, I was also lucky to be involved the Archers squad that earned an SWBA D1 Cup championship in 2014/15 and an appearance at SWBA D1 Final Fours. Ending my time with the Archers on a high, my final season saw me lead the Men’s 1st team to a triple crown of BUCS League, Conference Cup, and an inaugural Varsity title in 2016/17 - leading to winning the Cardiff Met Athletic Union Most Improved Team award, and earning an individual nomination for the Coach of the Year award.
Throughout this time at university, I began my journey in the Performance Pathway, being recruited to join the England U16 Women as a Performance Analyst & Assistant Coach, working with the team through to the 2016 European Championships in Oradea, Romania. Following the BBF merger of the Home Nations junior national teams, I was successful in retaining a role as Performance Analyst & Assistant Coach with the Great Britain U18 Women through to a 4th Place finish at the 2017 European Championships in Dublin, Ireland.
After graduation, I began to work full time at Basketball England at their head office in Manchester, quickly taking on coaching roles at Myerscough College and with the North West Regional Performance Centre. With Myerscough, I coached the Myerscough College WEABL team to an AoC Sport U19 Premier Cup Runners-Up medal, the Myerscough College Spinners to an U18 Women’s National Cup Semi-Final, and the Lancashire Spinners to a 3rd Place finish in WNBL Division One throughout the 2017/18 season.
Throughout this season I also worked with the England U18 Men in their prep for the Great Britain U18 Men’s selection process, and was the Performance Analyst for the domestic preparation camps with the England Senior Men that competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. To end the 2017/18 season, I coached the North West U13 Girls and U15 Girls squads, leading the U13 Girls to a 2nd Place finish at the 2018 Regional Development Tournament, where 5 of the squad went on to be selected for the England U14 Girls.
In the summer of 2018, I completed my Level 3 Coaching Award under the guidance of Graham Herstell and Danny Byrne (Manchester Giants), and was also invited to work at the Deng Top 50 Camp in London. That summer I was also recruited to join the powerhouse North West programme Manchester Magic & Mystics as their NBL Division One Assistant Coach & Performance Analyst, combined with an Assistant Coach role with their NBL U16 Girls Premier and NBL U18 Women Premier squads. I was also named Girls Head Coach of the inaugural year of the North West Aspire Programme, as Basketball England rebranded and relaunched their Regional Pathways.
The start of a great season with the Magic & Mystics programme came to an abrupt end when took up a full-time coaching position with HTS Storm Basketball Academy and Storm Basketball Club based in Crawley, West Sussex. Throughout four seasons with the HTS Storm, Crawley Storm, and Sussex Storm programmes, I coached from U11 through to U19, working with some of the most talented players and teams in the country.
To end the 2018/19 season, I led the NBL U14 Boys squad to a 6th Place finish in Premier South, supported the NBL U16 Boys to a National Cup and Junior Final Fours gold medal double winning season, and supported the NBL U18 Men to a Junior Final Fours bronze medal. At the Academy, I coached the HTS U19 II to a runners-up finish in the AoC Sport South East Conference, while also leading the HTS U12-U16 Boys & Girls squads to capture a clean sweep 10 out of 10 Sussex County Cup championships, before seeing the U14 Boys and U16 Boys through to the Quarter Finals stage of the Dynamik National Schools championships.
Throughout the end of the 2018/19 season, I also began coaching with the South East Aspire Programme, quickly taking on an Associate Head Coach role and being named U13 Girls Head Coach for the Aspire National Tournament. I was also appointed to the England U15 Girls coaching staff as an Assistant Coach, where the National Team competed in the inaugural Pauline Prior Tournament, before achieving a bronze medal finish at the 2019 Copenhagen Invitational Tournament in Denmark.
At the end of summer 2019, I also was invited to coach the Aspire Select team at the Humph Long Invitational Tournament, providing a pathway for Aspire athletes who had not yet broken into the National Team Pathway; multiple of those players have now played in WNBL Division One and/or the Women’s British Basketball League. That summer culminated in me reprising my role at the Deng Top 50 Camp, the final iteration of the camp, as it would not return after the pandemic.
In 2019/20, my roles at Sussex Storm stepped up as I Head Coached the NBL U12 Girls, NBL U12 Boys, NBL U14 Girls II, and NBL U16 Boys Premier. The Covid-19 shortened season saw Sussex Storm crowned champions of the U12 Boys South East Region and U12 Girls South Region, while the U14 Girls II squad finished 3rd in the South Region, and the U16 Boys achieved 7th Place in a competitive Premier South division.
On a more local level, 2019/20 saw me support Crawley Storm make a pioneering move to launch the Crawley Basketball League, removing all their team entries from the Basketball Sussex local league to create a development-focused central venue league.
On a national level, I had my first National Team Head Coaching experience in December 2019 as I was named Head Coach of the England U16 Girls and U18 Women’s National Teams for the 2019 Tri Nations Tournament in Manchester. I led the England Red squads to capture both the U16 & U18 Tri Nations titles, and was the only coach across both tournaments to post an undefeated record. |
